The most important markings on car tires

There are many markings embossed on the side of the tire, but only some of them are truly important from the user's perspective.

In my opinion, what you should particularly pay attention to before purchasing are the tire size, load index, speed rating, production date, and homologation.

Tire markings. What do they mean.

Tire manufacturers place a series of numbers and symbols on the sidewalls. When choosing tires individually, it is worth familiarizing yourself with their meanings beforehand.

In this article, you will learn everything about tire markings.

Tire Designations.

What You Should Know

245 indicates the tire width (value is given in mm)

45 indicates the tire aspect ratio, which is the percentage of the width to the height (in this example 65% of 235 mm = its profile height in mm)

R indicates a radial tire, referring to its construction type

18 indicates the diameter of the rim on which the tire can be mounted (value is given in inches, 1 inch = 2.54 cm)

100 is the value of its load index, meaning how much load it can carry (its value is given in the load index table where 108 = 1000 kg)

Y is the value of its speed index, indicating the speed we should not exceed when fully loaded (its value is given in the speed index table where Y = 300 km/h)

Tire production data

Let's find the word DOT on the tire; the last 4 digits indicate the production date (usually in a rounded border).

2 First digits - Week of production

2 Last digits - Year of production
