Where can I find the tire production date?

The production date can be found on every car tire.

These are 4 digits that first indicate the week and then the year of manufacture. The easiest way to locate this sequence of letters and numbers is to look for the word DOT.

The digits indicating the tire's age are usually located in a rounded enclosure at the end of such a sequence. It is worth mentioning that the word DOT can be found on both sides of the tire, but the production date can only be read from one.

The year of the tire is commonly referred to as the dot. When purchasing tires, everyone asks about the year and considers it an important criterion. Should we base our tire purchases solely on the production date? Definitely not.

Tire Production Data

What does the tire age say according to Polish standards?

Car tires (of course, new, never used) are considered new and fully valuable for 3 years from their production date according to the standard. Therefore, we shouldn't panic if we bought new tires that were produced, for example, 2 years ago.

It is not true that they must be in any way inferior to those produced today. I advise looking at it from a different angle and paying closer attention to where we make our purchases and how new tires are stored there.

Does DOT mean the date of tire production?

The term "DOT" has become commonly used in both Western Europe and Poland to refer to the date of tire production. However, in essence, DOT is an abbreviation for the American Department of Transportation.

The way tires are stored is also important

While the production date of tires is indeed a significant factor, it is equally important that rubber products such as tires are stored properly.

Unfortunately, in practice, the situation often looks different. A tire stored "out in the open" exposed to changing weather conditions accelerates the aging process, which ultimately negatively affects its properties. We cannot always be sure that a new tire, despite its older production year, was stored correctly by the seller, in accordance with accepted standards or the recommendations of its manufacturers.

The situation may be similar for tires produced in the current year. New winter tires left in the scorching summer sun on a rack outside the store, or a sagging pile of stacked tires in a promotional display at a supermarket, are indeed common sights.
